Head of Strategic Finance - Maternity Cover (15 Month FTC)

Dr. Martens is a globally recognisable and culturally influential British brand, with 65 years of rich heritage, rooted in craftmanship. As brand custodians, we are lucky to work for a dynamic, thriving, and ethical business, with people from diverse backgrounds, who bring their true selves to work, and where anyone can grow their career.

We are guided by three core values that are at the heart of everything we do: be yourself, act courageously, and show you care. They make us who we are and inspire us to push boundaries, embrace our individuality, and stand up for what's right.

THE GIG

Reporting into the Director of Group FP&A, this FTC maternity cover will support senior business stakeholders in the development, quantification and delivery of key strategic initiatives that underpin the Group’s 5 year plan. The role will directly manage two Senior Finance Managers, providing integral financial and commercial support to the business to enable robust decision making at the most senior level. The role works within the wider Group FP&A function and closely with Strategy Office to ensure that long term strategic ambitions are translated into robust financial plans and targets.

As our Head of Strategic Finance you will be responsible for:

  • Driving project and investment leadership: Partner with Strategy and business leaders globally to deliver financial and analytical support on high-impact projects (e.g., sustainability, new markets, new tech, consumer initiatives), framing complex scenarios and building robust assumptions to guide senior decision-making.
  • Owning long-term strategic planning: Lead the Group’s 5-year plan and financial model, managing submissions across regions/functions, embedding strategic initiatives, performing sensitivity and stress testing, and preparing Board papers to articulate plans.
  • Leading external and internal stakeholder engagement: Build strong relationships with auditors and external partners on audits and strategic projects, while collaborating with internal stakeholders across functions and regions to align strategy, finance, and performance.
  • Enhancing business performance through insights: Oversee deep analysis of performance drivers (e.g., store profitability, B2B segmentation, product planning tools), combining financial data and market research to generate actionable insights and clear recommendations.
  • Ensuring financial excellence and smooth transition: Align deliverables with FP&A and Global Finance processes, improve investment appraisal methodology, streamline reporting, and work closely with the current Head of Strategic Finance to ensure a seamless handover.

THE STUFF THAT SETS YOU APART

Put simply, for this role the key things we’re looking for are:

  • Qualified finance expertise: Fully qualified accountant (ACCA / CIMA / ACA) with strong experience in global, multi-channel businesses or strategic/commercial finance roles (including consulting).
  • Influential stakeholder management: Confidence to build credibility with senior leaders and external partners, constructively challenging thinking and influencing decisions.
  • Sharp analytical mindset: Ability to blend financial and non-financial data to uncover performance drivers, spot trends, and recommend improvements, with strong Excel skills for complex modelling.
  • Clear and impactful communication: Strong visual and presentation skills to translate complex data into insights that resonate with both finance and non-finance audiences.
  • Proven leadership and adaptability: Experience leading small teams, delivering high-quality work under pressure, and moving seamlessly between detail and big-picture thinking.
