Dr. Martens is a globally recognisable and culturally influential British brand, with over 60 years of rich heritage. As brand custodians, we are lucky to work for a dynamic, thriving, and ethical business, with people from diverse backgrounds, who bring their true selves to work, and where anyone can grow their career.

We are guided by three core values that are at the heart of everything we do: be yourself, act courageously, and show you care. They make us who we are and inspire us to push boundaries, embrace our individuality, and stand up for what's right.

Based at the birthplace of Dr. Martens at the Cobbs Lane Factory, the Product Development team bring to life the footwear sample requirements of the business and deliver high quality samples within the season calendar delivery dates.

Reporting to our Category Development Manager, you will work as part of the team liaising directly with the Dr Martens product and design teams within the Casuals category to ensure you understand the brief and design aesthetic requirements, then use your manufacturing knowledge to build the samples within our existing supply chain.

As our Footwear Developer you will be responsible for:

  • Producing prototypes from initial mock ups through to sealed samples for the collection within the main range that is allocated to you, whilst tracking against seasonal delivery dates
  • Working with design to explore options to satisfy the brief throughout the development season offering technical problem-solving solutions and debugging for ease of manufacture
  • Working collaboratively within the team and individually when required to create preliminary specifications and constructional tech packs to explain design concepts
  • Following seasonal timelines and processes to efficiently articulate technical guidance on product build and for line adjustment requirements
  • Working with the UK and Asia development team to build new lasts and outsoles for the season following clear standards and requirements to ensure compliance with the organisation’s standards and regulatory requirements
  • The data management required to support the sample build, including specification sheets that identify all components used within or removed from the product

Put simply, for this role the key things we’re looking for are:

  • Previous experience in footwear manufacturing
  • Excellent practical knowledge of building footwear and writing specs
  • The ability to assess the fit and functionality of new styles
  • Proficiency in detailing footwear build documents onto designer CADs to instruct overseas factories on manufacture for each product
  • The ability to clearly articulate design line changes onto pattern standards.
  • IT skills including Excel, Photoshop and or Illustrator.
  • PLM spec system knowledge preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills (verbal and written) to enable clear detailed communication with overseas factories.
